E E Slater – Bolton Abbey – c1900
An original slide view taken by E E Slater, it shows a section of the River Wharfe between Bolton Abbey and Barden Tower known as the Strid. This seemingly pretty stream is one of the most deadly stretches of water, the whirlpool currents between the narrow rocky banks will suck the unwary in, strong currents and underwater rocks have proved to be a death trap many times.

04 May 23 – This image was originally listed as being taken at Bolton Abbey – however, Philip Archdale using Google Search & Photos has identified it as Knaresborough Castle.

Original slide image taken by E E Slater, it shows the road which passes the Bolton Abbey estate. The wall with entrance arches still stands with a warning for high vehicles 10′ 9″, the cottages to the right have been demolished. Note the two persons seated on the low wall reading a newspaper.
