The Wilkinson boys did survive: Harry 26.03.1879 – 1954; Smith 22.02.1887 – 1956, Windmill Lane; James 07.12.1888 – 1962 Swaine Hill Street, and Fred 10.11.1890 – 1956.

Unfortunately we do have information about Alec Lee.

I am happy to say that we are not able to find any information on Zac Rudley, Charles Darnbrough, Fred Dunwell or Frank Saville.
This should mean that these boys survived the war and came home.

Additional Research

Zachariah Rudley. 1884 – 1952. Baptised at Wiggenhall St. Peter, Norfolk. Service No:s Private 7170 Norfolk Regiment and Private 25785 Essex Regiment. He enlisted in 1906 and served in South Africa, Gibraltar, India and France, where he was wounded in 1915. A year later he married Gertrude.

Charles E. Darnbrough. 25th Mar 1891 – 1971. Baptised at Rawdon St. Peter’s. Service No:’s Private 31462 Yorkshire Regiment and Private 13720 Labour Corps. Charles enlisted in 1915 and records show he also served with the Sherwood Foresters and suffered from trench fever. He married Carrie Wilkinson in 1916.

Fred Dunwell. 9th Jan 1890 – 1969. Born and baptised in Otley. Service No: 1392 Australia Light Horse Regiment. Fred enlisted in Melbourne when twenty-five and an apprentice carpenter. He served in Egypt and became a Lance Corporal, returning to Australia where he died in Victoria.

Frank Saville. 21st Sept 1895 – 1986 Service No:’s 12710 King’s Royal Rifle Corps and 575929 Labour Corps. Frank enlisted in December 1915 when twenty-three and served in France and Italy. He moved to the reserve list in March 1919 and married Eleanor Ramsden in 1933.

Aireborough Sailors 1914-1918

1418 – Aireborough Sailors.

I am happy to say that there is no information on either Wilfred Pratt or Walter Slater which should mean that these sailors survived the war and came back home to Rawdon and Yeadon.

Additional Research

Wilfred Pratt. 5th Oct 1896 – 1972. Was born in Guiseley. Service No: J42711 Royal Navy – an Ordinary then Able Seaman. He served from 27th July 1915 (Victory 1) until 31st May 1919 (Barham). He did survive and married Ida Whittingham at Rawdon St. Peter’s in 1924, and was living in Canada Road, Rawdon, at his death.

Walter Slater. 5th Mar 1892. Born in Guiseley to Sarah Elizabeth Slater. Service No: M24080. His service record shows under the title “rating” that he was Naval School Master. His first ship was the Galatea in August 1916, his last Princess Royal. He married Annie Dickinson in 1920.

Very happy to say that there is no information on these boys so it looks as if they all three made it back home after the war.
Just as a matter of interest here …is the census entry for Donald Slater, 5 years earlier when he was 12 years old.

Jack Metcalfe
Charles Edward Darnbrough was my wife`s grandfather on her mothers side. He served in the West Yorkshire Regiment and then the 23rd Labour Corps until he was discharged in 1919. He worked on the construction of Netherfield Road before he got a job at Peates Mill and worked there until he retired and died in 1971.

Charles Edward Darnbrough’s brother John was Killed in action in 1918 and is buried at Bedford House Cemetery, Near Ypres, Belgium.
My Grandma Bertha Elizabeth Darnbrough was their Sister.
